The Mellah of Fez is the historic Jewish quarter of Fez, located in Fes el Jdid, close to the Royal Palace. Established in the 15th century, it is considered one of the oldest Jewish quarters in Morocco.
The area was originally created to house the Jewish community in a protected and organized district, and over time it became an important center of commerce, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange between Jewish and Muslim communities.
Its architecture is distinct from the nearby Medina, with balconies, wooden façades, and narrow streets that reflect a different urban style within the same historic city.
Today, the Mellah is a quiet but powerful reminder of Fez’s multicultural past — where different communities once lived side by side, shaping the city’s identity.
